A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!
On Wednesday, December 20, 1939, the New York Daily News printed two four-star reviews on the same page under the headline “Gone With the Wind in Two Gala Openings.”
Kate Cameron, who saw the film at the Loew’s Capitol Theatre, wrote: “There are a dozen or more scenes and passages in the film that have never been equaled on the screen.” Wanda Hale, who attended the premiere at the Astor Theatre, wrote: “After three years of impatient waiting…we are finally rewarded, ten-fold, by this stunning production.”
Other New York City newspapers echoed the sentiments of the Daily News.
The critic for the New York Times, Frank Nugent, wrote: “The greatest motion picture mural we have seen and the most ambitious film-making venture in Hollywood’s spectacular history.”
The critic for the Post, Archer Winsten, noted: “Just as Birth of a Nation was a milestone of movie history, Gone With the Wind represents a supreme effort.”
