- Charles Brackett, Walter Reisch and Billy Wilder’s screenplay for Ninotchka
- Sidney Buchman’s screenplay for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
- Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s screenplay for Wuthering Heights
- Eric Maschwitz, R.C. Sherriff and Claudine West’s screenplay for Goodbye, Mr. Chips.
Sidney Howard’s nomination was a posthumous one. Sadly, he had been killed on August 23, 1939 in an accident on his cattle farm in Tyringham, Massachusetts.
