A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!
In the Best Director category, Victor Fleming’s work on Gone With the Wind was up against the following Academy Award contenders:
- Frank Capra who directed the action in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a film in which a naïve, idealistic man fills a United States Senate vacancy and clashes with political corruption.
- John Ford who directed the action in Stagecoach, a film in which travelers journeying through hostile Apache territory find their lives have changed by the time they reach their destination.
- Sam Wood who directed the action in Goodbye, Mr. Chips, a film in which a retired school teacher and headmaster recollects the decades of his career and personal life.
- William Wyler who directed the action in Wuthering Heights, a film in which a traveler stopping at an estate house on the moors during a snowstorm learns the heartbreaking story of lovers Cathy and Heathcliff.
Although Victor Fleming was one of three directors to work on Gone With the Wind, he received sole on-screen credit and an Academy Award nomination for his efforts. George Cukor was the first director, and Sam Wood – nominated for Goodbye, Mr. Chips – was Gone With the Wind‘s third director.
