A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!
Encouraged by the positive reviews from the Riverside preview audience, producer David O. Selznick and supervising film editor Hal Kern went back to the cutting room to snip more excess footage from Gone With the Wind.
Scenes subsequently deleted in September 1939 included:
- Scarlett and her sisters riding in the carriage to the Twelve Oaks barbecue
- Guests and servants at Twelve Oaks resting after the barbecue
- Scarlett’s wedding night during which she made her groom, Charles Hamilton, sleep in a chair
- Suellen and Carreen O’Hara discussing a post-Civil War South with few eligible men to marry them
- Scarlett encountering Ashley’s father, dying at the rail yard, as she searches for Dr. Meade
- Belle Watling tending to wounded soldiers
- Belle and some of her beauties testifying at the inquest following Frank Kennedy’s death
- Bonnie bringing a breakfast tray to Scarlett on the morning after Rhett’s ravishment
Sequences shortened included:
- Citizens evacuating Atlanta
- Scarlett and Melanie tending to the wounded in the Atlanta hospital
- Scarlett’s search for Dr. Meade at the rail yard
