Turner Classic Movies (www.tcm.com) offers two films this afternoon, each featuring a pre-Gone With the Wind performance from Leslie Howard and Vivien Leigh. Each film has a similar outcome.
At 3 p.m. (Eastern Time), TCM presents Berkeley Square from 1933. Leslie Howard portrays Peter Standish, a time traveler from America in 1933 transported to London in 1784 where he meets his ancestors.
At 6 p.m. (Eastern Time), TCM presents St. Martin’s Lane (also known as Sidewalks of London) from 1938. Vivien Leigh portrays Libby, a homeless pickpocket who steals a gold cigarette case from Rex Harrison then joins a trio of street performers led by Charles Laughton.
Just as in Gone With the Wind, each film concludes in heartbreak.
Happy 75th Anniversary, Gone With the Wind!
