A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!
On Wednesday, December 13, 1939, the governor of Georgia and the mayor of Atlanta welcomed David O. Selznick’s entourage to Margaret Mitchell’s hometown.
Selznick was accompanied by his wife Irene, his brother Myron, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Olivia de Havilland, Evelyn Keyes and Ona Munson. Clark Gable, his wife Carole Lombard and a group of MGM executives flew to Atlanta on a separate plane.
That evening, the Hollywood stars were guests of honor at a Junior League charity ball held at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, designed to resemble Gone With the Wind’s Monster Bazaar and decorated for the occasion in Confederate red and blue.
All of the stars were eager to meet Gone With the Wind’s author. But Margaret Mitchell had decided to settle an old score with the Junior League, which had denied her membership many years before. She had sent regrets that, because her father was ill, she would not be able to attend the ball.
