On Saturday, June 10, 1939, Victor Fleming directed his Gone With the Wind cast in two key scenes:
- In “Rhett’s Return from London,” Scarlett greets her husband and daughter upon their return from England. After admitting that she is pregnant and arguing with Rhett about the child’s paternity, Scarlett lunges at him and falls down the stairs.
- In “Rhett’s Final Farewell,” Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable filmed a second version of this sequence, using that damn word “damn” that had so worried producer David O. Selznick. At the last moment, Selznick added the word “frankly” to the beginning of Rhett’s line because he felt the word added an offhanded quality to the delivery.
Happy 75th Anniversary, Gone With the Wind!
