On Monday, June 5, 1939, Victor Fleming directed Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Hattie McDaniel and Cammie King in the “Rhett Wants a Divorce” scene.
Filming included the actions of Bonnie bringing a breakfast-in-bed tray to her mother; Scarlett finishing her breakfast and singing some lines from the ditty “Ben Bolt”; Mammy entering to remove the tray and sharing how she’s feeling with the misery in her back; and Rhett appearing with an apology, an appeal for a divorce and an announcement that he is taking Bonnie to London.
The segment of Bonnie bearing the tray to Scarlett’s bedside was deleted during editing. Subsequently, the question of how the tray got there became a bit of a puzzler for Gone With the Wind‘s audiences. Did Rhett’s romantic overtures the previous night perhaps include a midnight supper?
Happy 75th Anniversary, Gone With the Wind!
