In the Best Supporting Actress category, Gone With the Wind had a double nomination: Olivia de Havilland for her portrayal of Melanie and Hattie McDaniel for her portrayal of Mammy. 

They competed with each other and the following Academy Award contenders:

  • Geraldine Fitzgerald for her role as the naïve Isabella Linton in Wuthering Heights
  • Edna May Oliver for her role as the wealthy widow Mrs. McKlennar in Drums Along the Mohawk
  • Maria Ouspenskaya for her role as grandmother Janou in Love Affair.
