A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!

On Friday, June 9, 1939, Victor Fleming directed Vivien Leigh, Victor Jory and Isabel Jewell in the scene in which Scarlett confronts Tara’s former overseer, Jonas Wilkerson, and his wife, Emmy Slattery.

They have come to “pay a call – a friendly call – and talk a little business with old friends.” The business that Wilkerson has in mind is making a good offer to buy Tara because “Emmy had a hankering to live here.”

Enraged at the thought of the Yankee Wilkerson and the woman responsible for Ellen O’Hara’s death possessing Tara, Scarlett orders them off the property and flings a handful of dirt in Wilkerson’s face for good measure.

This was Isabel Jewell’s only scene in Gone With the Wind, and she had only one line of dialogue: “Yes, it’s me.” The role just seems larger because of all the talk about Emmy’s white-trash ways in part one of the film.

Happy 75th Anniversary, Gone With the Wind!
