A book to celebrate GWTW’s 75th Anniversary!

On Monday, February 12, 1940, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its list of Oscar nominees for 1939. David O. Selznick’s masterpiece scored an unprecedented 13 nominations in 12 categories:

  • Best Picture – Gone With the Wind
  • Best Actress – Vivien Leigh
  • Best Actor – Clark Gable
  • Best Supporting Actress – double nomination – Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel
  • Best Director – Victor Fleming
  • Best Screenplay – Sidney Howard
  • Best Cinematography, Color – Ernest Haller and Ray Rennahan
  • Best Art Direction – Lyle Wheeler
  • Best Film Editing – Hal C. Kern and James E. Newcom
  • Best Special Effects – Jack Cosgrove
  • Best Musical Score – Max Steiner
  •  Best Sound Recording – Thomas Moulton

One surprise — Leslie Howard’s portrayal of Ashley Wilkes was bypassed as a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

In all the categories for which it had nominations, Gone With the Wind had stiff competition. (To be continued)
